Tech it for a spin: Turning AT trials into meaningful outcomes
Presentation summary
Access to assistive technology (AT) trials remains one of the most influential yet underutilised factors in achieving optimal outcomes for people with disabilities. Occupational Therapists (OTs) are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between product exploration, clinical reasoning, and successful implementation, yet systemic and practical barriers often limit opportunities for hands-on trials.
This presentation will explore innovative, evidence-informed approaches developed and implemented across two occupational therapy practices to enhance access to AT trials. We will demonstrate how a structured, client-centred and collaborative environment can streamline trial access, reduce administrative delays, and improve alignment between client goals, functional needs, and device selection.
Through comparative case examples and service data, we will illustrate the impact of early trial facilitation on client engagement, funding approval rates, and long-term functional outcomes. Attendees will gain practical insights into establishing cross-practice partnerships with suppliers, integrating multidisciplinary collaboration, and designing service processes that are scalable and sustainable for private and community settings alike.
This presentation will detail a replicable framework that will empower OTs to move beyond traditional referral-based trial models toward proactive facilitation, ensuring equitable and timely access to technology that enhances independence, participation, and quality of life.
