ChatGPT to ChatOT: Using AI to Assist in the AT Assessment Process

Presentation summary

Occupational Therapists (OTs) base their recommendations on person-centred reasoning, functional goals, and evidence-based practice. However, the growing number of assistive technology (AT) options, complex funding systems, and administrative demands can limit valuable clinical time. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming how OTs explore, compare, and prescribe AT, offering opportunities to streamline decision-making while preserving professional reasoning. Acting as a digital co-pilot, AI enables OTs to work smarter, not faster—enhancing, rather than replacing, therapeutic expertise.

This presentation will demonstrate how AI tools can support OTs across the AT assessment process. Real-world examples will show how AI assists with product exploration, feature comparison, and alignment with occupational goals. The discussion will also address ethical and professional considerations, including data privacy, transparency, and maintaining clinical reasoning at the centre of all decisions.

Attendees will gain practical, actionable strategies for integrating AI safely and effectively into clinical workflows. The focus will be on harnessing AI to reduce administrative burden, access current evidence efficiently, and support timely, equitable AT recommendations across diverse contexts.

Ultimately, this session will invite OTs to reimagine practice, where technology becomes a trusted ally that amplifies professional capacity, upholds person-centred care, and strengthens the art and science of occupational therapy.
