Driving Ahead: Launch of revised Australian competency standards for occupational therapy driving assessors.
Presentation summary
Revised competency standards for occupational therapy driver assessors have been launched by Occupational Therapy Australia to reflect contemporary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and approaches for safe, effective, and ethical practice in driving assessment and rehabilitation. The new standards present a national approach and acknowledge the growing complexity, demand, and evolving scope of driver trained occupational therapists, as well as advances in technology, evidence, and jurisdictional and funding arrangements.
This presentation outlines the background and review process, developed in collaboration with a national driving taskforce and through profession-wide consultation. It will highlight key considerations of jurisdictional licensing, funding, and governance systems to ensure a nationally consistent approach. Key changes in the revised standards are presented, emphasising implications for occupational therapy workforce capability, quality and safety, funding, policy reform and future research opportunities.
The revised standards articulate essential capabilities for contemporary driver assessment and rehabilitation, providing a foundation for good clinical practice, professional supervision, continuing professional development, and broader advocacy, education, and policy design. Attendees will be invited to consider application of the standards in their own practice and services and to contribute feedback to inform ongoing review and evaluation.
