Baking with confidence: Practical tools for skill development in real work settings

Presentation summary

Introduction / background
What does capacity building look like when the clinic space is a bakery? This interactive session invites participants to explore how meaningful, everyday work can support learning, confidence and independence for young adults with disability. Occupational Therapy principles were used to create structured yet flexible tools that encouraged participation, routine and social connection in a busy community workplace.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Identify how everyday tasks can be adapted to promote learning and engagement
2. Apply visual and structured strategies to support participation in real work settings
3. Reflect on how Occupational Therapy reasoning can shape inclusive, skill-building programs for young people with disability

Method / approach for audience engagement
Participants will rotate through an interactive display of practical Occupational Therapy tools developed for a social enterprise bakery, including goal planning templates, sequencing boards, adaptive recipe cards and social learning prompts. Each resource will be paired with a short explanation of its function and impact. Attendees will be encouraged to trial the tools, discuss adaptations and share their reflections in small groups.

Relevance to occupational therapy practice
Occupational Therapists are experts in analysing activity and designing supports that foster participation. Applying this reasoning within authentic community settings demonstrates how small, creative interventions can make learning accessible and meaningful. This approach aligns with our profession’s focus on inclusion, capability building and real-world engagement, showing how purposeful occupation can lead to both personal and systemic change.
