Across the lifespan: Launching OTA’s new capability framework for occupational therapists working with adults
Presentation summary
A new capability framework for occupational therapists working with adults has been developed as the final component in a suite of capability frameworks that define safe, effective, and ethical occupational therapy practice across the lifespan. This framework complements existing resources addressing working with children, young people and families, and older people, and aligns with frameworks developed across key practice areas such as assistive technology, environmental and home modifications, pain, and mental health.
The framework acknowledges the complexity and evolving scope of occupational therapy practice with adults, highlighting the multifactorial and integrated approaches required to address changing life roles, adult participation, diverse contexts, and shifting policy and funding environments. It articulates the capabilities (knowledge, skills, attributes, and supports) that underpin high-quality, contemporary practice across the varied systems and contexts in which occupational therapists work with adults.
The presentation will outline the background, development process, and structure of the framework, developed through collaboration with an expert advisory group, subject matter experts, and profession-wide consultation. It will demonstrate how this framework supports occupational therapists to deliver quality adult-focused services – from legislation, to best practice principles, assessment and intervention, and interdisciplinary practice.
Attendees will gain insight into how the framework can be applied in practice and inform self-reflection, professional supervision, workforce planning, and continuing professional development. Delegates will be invited to share feedback and experiences to inform implementation strategies.
