Enhancing Client Outcomes Through Scripting Excellence and Collaborative Follow-Up Practice
Presentation summary
For many early-career occupational therapists, prescribing complex wheelchairs and multi-component mobility systems can feel overwhelming. The combination of clinical reasoning, technical requirements and client-specific goals often creates uncertainty, especially when confidence is still developing. According to the World Health Organisation, successful wheelchair provision relies on four key stages: selection, fitting, review and follow-up. Yet in practice, follow-up is the step most commonly overlooked or rushed—despite being essential to long-term client success.
When effective follow-up does not occur, even well-chosen equipment can fall short. Small unresolved issues can escalate, leading to discomfort, reduced engagement, and in the worst cases, complete abandonment of the prescribed system. This presents not only a setback for the client but also a missed opportunity for growing therapists to refine their skills in collaborative problem-solving.
This presentation aims to demystify the scripting process for early and emerging therapists by breaking it down into practical, relatable components. It will begin with a clear overview of foundational considerations when prescribing complex wheelchair systems, highlighting common challenges faced by those new to the field. The session will then guide participants through an in-depth case study that follows a scripting journey from initial assessment through delivery and follow-up. By unpacking the reasons a previous prescription was unsuccessful, participants will gain valuable insight into how thoughtful review and proactive follow-up can prevent non-use and improve outcomes.
Attendees will gain increased clarity, confidence and practical strategies for approaching complex wheelchair scripting—supported by a supplier-side OT perspective grounded in real-world experience.
